Writing With Music

Okay, so the title of this post may be a little misleading in that I can’t actually write while listening to music. I can’t even write with another person in the room because whatever part of my brain churns out my glorious literary masterpieces (that’s sarcastic, by the way) doesn’t work if there’s any distraction.

I’m usually working on graphics in Photoshop when I listen to music, so I’m listening frequently at work, and just because I can’t enjoy music while writing doesn’t mean I can’t take inspiration from what I hear at other times.

What kind of music do you enjoy? Does it make you feel inspired? I consider Holy Ground by Within Temptation to be the theme for Vampire The Begotten.

In general, I lean toward rock, gothic metal, and new age. I also enjoy a lot of foreign artists; anything from Eisbrecher, to Lacuna Coil, to Grai or Alkonost, but I have dozens more bookmarked on Spotify.

If you’re a writer, does music help you to picture scenes, or envision the feelings behind what’s occurring in your story? See if you can guess what book 2 in the Begotten Vampire series will be about based on this song, also from Within Temptation.
